Although excessive underarm sweat isn't the most pleasant topic of discussion, it's often caused by a real medical condition that may need treatment beyond what drugstore antiperspirants can offer. Women and men suffering from excessive underarm sweating, technically called hyperhidrosis, are able to explore a new option, available at Houston Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, that creates lasting results without surgery: ThermiDry.

To learn more about ThermiDry treatments at Houston Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, request a consultation to using our online form or call us at (281) 282-9555 to book your appointment. We offer a variety of nonsurgical procedures to improve your body and quality of life.

What Is ThermiDry?

ThermiDry is a minimally invasive treatment that reduces excessive sweating by "deactivating" underarm sweat glands through the use of radiofrequency energy. ThermiDry requires only local anesthesia and no significant downtime. While the procedure is not surgical, it does require extremely small incisions to target glands just below the skin. These incisions do not create any significant scarring.

Who Can Benefit from ThermiDry?

ThermiDry is appropriate for anyone who is bothered by excessive underarm sweating. Complaints related to hyperhidrosis are often both physical and emotional, and include:

  • Embarrassment brought on by visible underarm wetness
  • Frustration due to stains on clothing
  • Avoidance of social activities due to fear of sweat stains
  • Discomfort from excessive underarm wetness

During your consultation, you and your ThermiDry provider will discuss your eligibility for the procedure. ThermiDry uses powerful radiofrequency energy that's been proven safe and effective. This versatile technology is also used in ThermiTight®, ThermiSmooth® Face, and ThermiVa®.

The ThermiDry Procedure

Prior to your procedure, your provider first anesthetizes your underarm with a local injection to ensure your comfort for the duration of the procedure. He then makes several very small incisions through which he inserts the ThermiDry probe. Using the probe, he directs radiofrequency energy to your underarm sweat glands, disabling them. Because the human body has millions of sweat glands from head to toe, there's no harm in targeting underarm glands. After the brief, in-office procedure, surgical tape will be used to close your incisions.

Recovery and Results

There's no necessary downtime after a ThermiDry procedure, although you may wish to spend the rest of the day relaxing at home. You may experience some lingering soreness and redness in the treated areas, but this will resolve within a day or so. You should notice an immediate reduction in sweat production, and your results can last for several years.
