Breastfeeding and Breast Implants?

First off I want to say that it is absolutely safe for women with implants to breast feed.

As far as whether you can or not, that is a different question.

The vast majority of my patients over the past 22 years have said “Yes, No Problems, it went well.” I know this because I am seeing them now 10 or 20 years later for their tummy tucks!

Technically, however some women do have difficulties related to the compression that smaller breast undergo after a breast augmentation. The breast tissue just gets so squashed that they cannot release their milk.

Certainly, in my opinion, implanting a breast under the muscle affords a woman a better chance of being able to successfully breast feed rather than placing the implant over the muscle. Implantation over the muscle gives the breast tissue more direct pressure from the underlying implant.

All-in-all women should be aware than some may not be able to breast feed after a breast augmentation. As always, I urge you to remember that every body is unique and comes with its own set of peculiarities. If breast feeding is something absolutely mandatory for you, perhaps put the surgery off until you’re done raising babies. Then come on in for a “complete overhaul!”
