Your plastic surgeon will examine your breasts, and photographs will be taken for your medical record. When planning the surgery, your surgeon will consider such factors as the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin, and the location of your nipples and areolas (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipples). If your breasts have stretched, lax skin, a breast lift may be recommended in conjunction with augmentation.
Medical Intake
During your consultation, your surgeon will review your medical history. This will include a review of any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries including breast biopsies, and medications that you currently take. You will be asked whether you have a family history of breast cancer and about the results of any mammograms. It is important for you to provide complete information.

Our plastic surgeons perform breast augmentation using several incision techniques and options for implant placement. Your choice of implants may influence the surgical techniques used during the procedure.
- Inframammary: This incision is placed just above the crease where the lower breast meets the chest.
- Periareolar: This incision is placed just below the bottom edge of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple).
- Transaxillary: This incision is placed in a natural crease in the underarm.
Implant Placement
Breast implants may either be placed above the chest muscle (subglandular placement) or behind the muscle (submuscular placement). There are a number of factors to consider in making the choice, all of which your surgeon will explain at the consultation.
Fat Grafting
In some cases, our surgeons use a process called fat grafting to move fat cells from an area of the body where they are unwanted to augment the breasts. They harvest the fat through liposuction and then inject it at various depths and locations around the breasts. This can be an excellent way to contour the areas around breast implants for a natural softness.
Your Procedure
On the day of surgery, you will return to our medical facility, where you will be comforted by the same familiar surroundings and medical staff from your private consultation. We have a state-of-the-art, on-site surgical suite that is specially designed for procedures performed by our plastic surgeons.
Breast augmentation surgery is an outpatient procedure, so you will likely return home the same day. Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgery. Frequently, local anesthesia and intravenous sedation are used during breast augmentation, although general anesthesia may be desirable in some instances.
During breast augmentation procedures, you may opt to have your surgeon insert your implants using the Keller Funnel®, which offers several benefits. The device allows your surgeon to use a smaller incision, and eliminates physician and patient contact with the implant, potentially reducing the risk of infection and capsular contracture.
When surgery is completed, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings or a surgical bra. You will be taken into a recovery area, where you will continue to be closely monitored. You may be permitted to go home after a few hours, unless you and your plastic surgeon have determined that you will stay in the hospital or surgical facility overnight.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
It is helpful to have a friend, spouse, or family member help care for you during your recovery. Each breast augmentation patient recovers at her own pace. Your surgeon monitors your progress after surgery and encourages you to call the office with any concerns or questions.
Patients are instructed to be up and walking on the very day of surgery and typically can shower the next morning. It is normal to experience pain, swelling, and fatigue for the first 24 to 48 hours. Medication will be prescribed for pain management, but some tenderness and discomfort may persist. Surgical dressings will be removed after a few days and replaced with a special surgical compression bra.
Typically, you will be able to shower 3 to 7 days after surgery. Stitches will be removed around a week after breast augmentation.
Any discoloration should dissipate quickly, and most residual swelling will go down within the first month of your breast augmentation recovery period. Initially, your breasts will be sore, and you may experience a feeling of tightness in the breast skin as it adjusts to the new size.
Returning to Work
Depending on the type of work you do, you may be able to return to your job in a matter of a few days. If your job requires a lot of physical labor, however, especially using your arms (such as lifting, stretching, or moving equipment), you will likely need to wait a couple of weeks before returning to work. Engaging in vigorous activities too soon can hinder and prolong your recovery from breast augmentation, so it is important to pay attention to how your body feels and not push yourself.
Resuming Exercise
Strenuous activity and exercise should not be resumed until a month after breast augmentation. Avoid strenuous and high-impact exercises that will increase breast motion. Other forms of low-impact exercise are encouraged to help reduce the likelihood of blood clotting after breast augmentation. It is advised to wear a support bra without underwire during these low-impact exercise sessions. Anyone considering breast augmentation should discuss the recovery process at length with her surgeon to gain an accurate understanding of the time commitment required.
Sexual Activity
Sexual activity should be avoided for at least the first week after your procedure. It is important to be extremely gentle with your breasts for the first month as they continue to heal.
Do’s & Don’ts After Breast Augmentation Surgery
After breast augmentation surgery, it is recommended that you DO:
- Follow all postoperative care instructions
- Stay hydrated, and drink plenty of fluids
- Avoid sodium, and maintain a balanced diet
- Get plenty of rest
- Massage the chest area gently to improve circulation and reduce the retention of fluid
- Make sure that your plastic surgeon knows about all of your medications before the procedure
- Resume your daily routine gradually
- Avoid pulling clothes over your head (button-down garments are recommended)
- Avoid any type of trauma, including punctures and forceful impact and compression
- Sleep on your back after surgery as recommended
- Get moving with light activity as soon as possible after surgery
- Call the doctor if you suspect infection or other breast augmentation complications that may affect your health
After breast augmentation, it is advised that you DO NOT:
- Ignore postoperative care instructions
- Engage in strenuous activities and exercise for the first few weeks
- Sleep on your side or stomach
- Wear a bra with underwire support
- Miss follow-up appointments
- Smoke
- Expose scars to the sun without protection
- Overexert yourself

Should I have breast augmentation if I plan to lose weight?
If you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight, be sure to tell your plastic surgeon at your consultation. They may recommend that you stabilize your weight prior to undergoing surgery.
Is it safe to become pregnant after having breast augmentation?
If you think that you may want to become pregnant in the future, you should mention this to your surgeon. There is no evidence that breast implants will harm your baby. However, pregnancy and breastfeeding can change breast size and shape in unpredictable ways and could affect the long-term cosmetic results of your breast augmentation. In some cases, it may make sense to wait. If you decide not to wait, our surgeons offer many breast enhancement procedures that will help you restore and enhance your breasts.
Can I breastfeed after getting breast implants?
Some people assume breastfeeding after breast augmentation is not possible or that it’s more difficult than it should be. Breastfeeding after breast enhancement surgery is absolutely possible. Informing your surgeon prior to surgery will allow him or her to choose the incisions that will increase the likelihood of breastfeeding after your surgery.
Which incisions are best if I plan to breastfeed after breast augmentation?
With any breast procedure, severing ducts or nerves will cause decreased milk production for breastfeeding. The position, direction, and size of the incision determine how milk production may be affected. Surgeons often attempt to minimize scarring in breast augmentation surgery to improve the aesthetic appearance of the breast by placing incisions in less visible areas, such as on the areola or underneath the breast in the inframammary fold. An incision on or around the perimeter of the areola, particularly along the lower edge, will likely affect the nerves of the nipple and areola, as well as milk production. Incisions below the fold of the breast or through the armpit are not likely to affect breastfeeding.
Which type of bra should I wear after breast augmentation?
Many women are unsure of whether a sports bra, compression bra, surgical bra, or no bra at all is best after breast augmentation.
- Sports Bra or Compression Bra: After breast augmentation, the skin and muscle around the chest area must adjust to the new weight of the breasts. A good sports bra or compression bra can ease this discomfort and prevent muscle tearing by providing ample support and limiting of the new breasts. In addition, an adequate sports bra will provide solid support of breasts that an ordinary bra will be unable to provide. It’s important your breasts are kept in place after breast augmentation to enhance the healing process; a sports bra does an excellent job.
- Medical-Grade Compression Bra: Some plastic surgeons prefer to send their patients home wearing a medical-grade compression bra. This specialized type of support garment is made especially for postoperative patients and is very easy to put on and take off. The medical-grade bra can benefit you in the following ways:
- Minimizes swelling
- Speeds up the healing process
- Improves blood circulation
- Allows you to return to your normal daily routines more quickly
This garment provides extra support, even more than a sports bra, to the surgical areas for added comfort during recovery. A patient may be advised to wear a compression bra for several weeks after breast augmentation.
- Braless: Our surgeons recommend supporting your breasts whenever possible after having breast augmentation. While you may want your implants to settle as soon as possible, you don’t want gravity affecting the shape and appearance of the breasts. Your implants will certainly settle on their own over time. If unsupported, the weight of your new implants will naturally stretch the lower portion of your breast tissue and skin causing your breasts to sag and lose their attractive shape. So, if you want to avoid a breast lift for as long as possible, it is not advised to go braless.
What will the scars look like?
The scars left by incisions through which the breast implants are inserted will remain pink for the first 6 weeks or so and then fade significantly over the following months. Over time, these scars usually become very inconspicuous.
Will breast implants increase my risk of cancer?
There is no scientific evidence that breast augmentation increases the risk of breast cancer. The presence of breast implants, however, may make it more technically difficult to take and read mammograms. This may be a special consideration for women who perhaps are at higher risk for breast cancer because of their family history or other reasons. Placement of the implant underneath the pectoral muscle may interfere less with mammographic examination, but other factors may also need to be considered with regard to implant placement. Your plastic surgeon will discuss this with you.
What are the possible risks and complications of the surgery?
Complications are rare, but no procedure is completely free of risk. If you are planning to have breast augmentation, your doctor should review a list of possible complications, which may include:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Abnormal scarring
- Painful and/or restricted arm and shoulder motion
- Uneven appearance of breasts, either due to position or size
- Implants may harden, rupture, leak, or deflate
- Implants may make cancer detection more difficult
- Decreased sensation
Breast augmentation is an elective surgery. If you have any illnesses or you are in poor health for any reason, you should not undergo this procedure. Possible side effects of breast augmentation surgery include but are not limited to temporary breast soreness, swelling, and change in nipple sensation. The length of these side effects will vary by patient.
