Choosing a Mommy Makeover Before Reaching Weight Goal

Many people considering plastic surgery turn to internet resources such as RealSelf because they provide access to information directly from board-certified specialists. Women who are considering Mommy Makeover surgery in Houston commonly ask on RealSelf if they have to be at their goal weight before undergoing the procedure that includes tummy tuck surgery.

As you might guess, the answer is a bit more complicated than simply yes or no. It is best if you are at your ideal weight and, more importantly, in good overall health. But there’s more to determining the best time for getting surgery such as a Mommy Makeover—which typically includes body contouring surgery along with a breast lift with or without implants—than just the weight of a patient.

Some additional factors to consider include:

  • All weight is not the same: Even though 2 women may weigh the same and be the same height, one patient may have other health concerns that need to be considered in addition to her weight. In some cases, it’s safer for a patient to shed additional weight before undergoing Mommy Makeover surgery.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is important: BMI measures a person’s weight in relation to her or his height. Generally speaking, I would not recommend a patient with a BMI of 30 or higher having Mommy Makeover surgery.
  • Patients within 15 to 20 pounds of their goal weight can have a mommy makeover: A healthy woman with a BMI under 30 can typically have a Mommy Makeover even if she’s still as much as 20 pounds heavier than the weight that she wants to maintain.
  • Weight loss after a Mommy Makeover: Many patients are comfortable with their weight and excited about their appearance of the surgery. Some women still want to lose weight, but it’s important to know that significant weight loss following the surgery may affect the results of a breast lift or breast augmentation.

Women considering a Mommy Makeover who still want to lose weight should start by having a thorough exam and consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon and make sure they understand that their results may not be optimal. In some cases, setting a goal of getting a Mommy Makeover can help motivate patients to lose weight and then pursue a regular exercise program after the surgery to maintain the results.
