Breast Lift

Women who are generally satisfied with the size of their breasts but want to correct sagging, often choose to have a breast lift. At Houston Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons perform breast lift surgery to elevate and reshape the breasts, resulting in a more youthful appearance. Loss of skin elasticity, gravity, and other factors such as weight loss, pregnancy, and breastfeeding ultimately affect the shape and firmness of your breasts.

Women considering breast lift surgery choose Houston Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Webster, TX, to have our experienced surgeons perform their procedures. To get started, request a consultation online or call our office at (281) 282-9555 and a member of our staff can help schedule an appointment.

About Breast Lift

A breast lift can be performed at any age, but plastic surgeons usually recommend waiting until breast development has stopped. Pregnancy and breastfeeding may have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts. Nevertheless, many women decide to undergo breast lift surgery before having children and feel that they can address any subsequent changes later. Since the milk ducts and nipples are left intact, breast lift surgery usually will not affect your ability to breastfeed.

Good Candidates for Breast Lift

You may be a good candidate for breast lift surgery if you have one or more of the following:

  • Breasts that are pendulous but of satisfactory size
  • Breasts that lack substance or firmness
  • Nipples and areolas that point downward, especially if they are positioned below the breast crease

Sometimes, these conditions may be inherited traits. In certain cases, breasts develop differently so that one breast is firm and well-positioned while the other is not. There may be differences in the size of your breasts as well as their shape. Women who have had children may combine a breast lift with implants along with body contouring procedures, such as a tummy tuck and liposuction, as part of a mommy makeover.

Your Breast Lift

Breast lift surgery can be performed using intravenous sedation or a general anesthetic. Either way, it is an outpatient procedure in most cases. After your consultation, your surgeon creates a surgical plan based on the degree of sagging and the cosmetic goals you want to achieve. As highly experienced cosmetic breast surgeons, our team’s expertise includes multiple techniques, as outlined in the table.

The procedure begins with the surgeon making the necessary incisions. They then reshape the breasts by lifting the tissue and improving the breast’s contour and firmness. Repositioning the nipple and areola so they sit in a more natural and youthful position is next, which may also include reducing the size of the areola. Finally, the surgeon removes excess breast skin and closes the incisions. The nipple is never removed from the breast and virtually all patients should retain nipple sensation.

There are 3 common incision patterns used for breast lift surgery:

Doughnut incision graphic

The doughnut incision is made around the areola.

Lollipop incision graphic

The lollipop pattern adds an incision on the lower portion of the breast to the crease.

Anchor pattern incision graphic

The anchor pattern adds a third horizontal incision along the crease of the breast.

Combining Procedures

It is very common for patients to combine a breast lift with other procedures during the same surgery. This is especially true for women who are getting a breast lift to remedy the changes brought on by pregnancy. Many women who have had children not only see their breasts sag but also lose volume, especially after breastfeeding. In those cases, combining breast augmentation with a breast lift or fat transfer to the breast can enhance both the size and shape of the breasts.

Women may also want to consider nonsurgical ThermiVa® after having children. This treatment uses radiofrequency energy to spur new collagen growth, tightening and toning the tissues of the vulva and vagina in a single 30-minute treatment.

Additionally, while women with large and heavy breasts may benefit from a breast lift, the results may not be as long-lasting as in a patient with smaller breasts. Some women may instead opt for a breast reduction at the time of their breast lift.

What Happens During the Consultation?

Your surgeon examines your breasts, taking measurements and perhaps photographs for your medical records. The size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin, and the placement of the nipples and areolas are carefully evaluated. To get the best results, it’s important your surgeon knows your desired breast shape and size. We’ll discuss how your nipples and areolas will be repositioned. You should mention anything else about your breasts that you would like to see improved. This will help us to understand your expectations and determine whether they realistically can be achieved.

How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost in Houston?

The price of a breast lift at Houston Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery starts at $6,100 and varies with individual factors, including the complexity of the surgical technique and whether your breast lift will be combined with implants or other procedures. At your consultation, you will be given a detailed estimate for the cost of your actual surgery that includes fees for:

  • The surgeon
  • Surgical suite
  • Anesthesiologist

Although cost may be a factor in selecting a surgeon, it shouldn’t be the primary one. Our plastic surgeons are highly experienced with breast enhancement procedures. We have an established track record when it comes to safety and results.

Preparing for Your Consultation

You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have undergone, previous surgeries (such as breast biopsies), and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.

You should tell us if you plan to lose a significant amount of weight, particularly if you have noticed that your breasts sag or become smaller with weight loss. Your surgeon may recommend that you stabilize your weight before having surgery.

Breast Lift Recovery

Your surgeon applies dressings and bandages to the incision sites at the end of breast lift surgery. We will provide a support bra to minimize swelling and help keep your breasts lifted during the recovery. A small tube may be placed under the skin to help drain any excess fluid. Most breast lifts do not require a drain.

Each patient recovers at a unique pace, but following the postoperative instructions provided by your surgeon will help enhance the healing process and minimize your discomfort. Your sutures and surgical drain are removed at a follow-up appointment about a week after the procedure.

The recovery from a breast lift is often quicker than other procedures because it involves little or no trauma to the chest muscle. Patients can typically return to work within a week of the procedure and begin light exercise focused on the lower body in about 2 weeks. You can get back to more strenuous workouts that include the upper body gradually, beginning about 4 weeks after your surgery.
