Browse the internet or flip through popular magazines and you’ll discover that plastic surgery and other cosmetic enhancements are written about more frequently than ever. Social media trends often highlight the latest procedure and celebrities freely discuss their favorite treatments.
Against this backdrop, breast augmentation endures as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure, according to the latest statistics compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This certainly holds true at our practice. We see more patients wanting breast augmentation at Houston Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery than any other type of cosmetic surgery.
And the numbers are rising, statistics show, with the nearly 314,000 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2018 registering a 4% increase over the previous year. Looking back nearly 20 years to 2000, the popularity of breast augmentation has jumped 48%. One reason for that increase is the advances made by breast implant manufacturers and refined surgical techniques.
At our practice, Dr. Clayton Moliver says tools such as the Keller Funnel® and the recognition of behind-the-muscle implant placement as a preferred technique has led to improved outcomes that look natural. Dr. Moliver, who’s performed more than 6,000 breast augmentation surgeries in his career, discusses the procedure in this video.
The Popularity of Cosmetic Enhancements
Even as cosmetic surgery, such as liposuction and tummy tucks, in addition to breast augmentation, becomes more acceptable and discussed, it’s the rise of nonsurgical treatments that is really driving the overall numbers higher each year. The president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons said in a recent interview that the increased number of “tools in the toolbox” enable surgeons to create excellent results with minimal invasiveness.
That’s certainly true at our Houston plastic surgery practice. We’ve seen a significant increase in patients getting facial rejuvenation treatments such as microneedling and ThermiSmooth® Face to minimize wrinkling and improve skin texture. Nonsurgical body contouring procedures are also more popular.
In this age of social media and selfies, people want to be confident in their appearances. That’s more possible than ever with the versatility of today’s surgical and nonsurgical treatments. Women and men realize they can change things about their appearance that has made them feel self-conscious all their lives, or beautify areas marred by an injury or accident.
